After another sleepless night caused by her snoring spouse, Nancy H. Rothstein, MBA — The Sleep Ambassador® — began investigating the science of sleep. What she found amazed her and changed her career. Today, Nancy consults with Fortune 500 companies, lectures at universities, and speaks on media outlets nationwide about the transformative power of sleep.
“Even if you have a fabulous skillset and great training and development, if you’re sleep deprived it’s all compromised,” Nancy told GenHERation. “We are like cities that never sleep inside. Life is a 24-hour operation, and sleep sets the foundation for how you function during the waking hours.” During sleep, the body processes nutrients, restores itself, encodes memories, and cleanses the brain.
Nancy’s 5 Sleep Tips for Students
- Make sleep a priority. Giving yourself the sleep your body needs makes it easier to do and enjoy every other activity on your busy schedule.
- Create the ideal sleeping environment. Keep your bedroom quiet, cool, dark, and uncluttered. These qualities help your mind and body transition to rest.
- Prepare for sleep. Set an alarm for one hour before bedtime to remind yourself to transition. Stop working, read a book, or take a warm shower.
- Tune out from tech. Blue light from screens keeps your mind awake. Unplug at least an hour before sleep and charge devices away from your bed.
- Keep bed a place for sleep. Avoid doing schoolwork in bed. Wake up when your alarm sounds and make your bed — it signals the day has begun.
